The BMW i5 is What's Great About 2018

    TAMPA, FL, June 16, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to German publication AutoBild, the new BMW i5 sedan -- a combination of the carmaker's 5-, 7- and 6-Series models -- will reportedly launch in 2018 rather than 2020, and may go up against Tesla's Model S plug-in electric car. (1)

The i5 would be the newest addition to the automaker's hybrid/electric i family, and according to Autoweek, will be based on the long-wheelbase version of BMW's 5-Series sedan, and therefore will not feature the carbon fiber chassis/interior structure found on the i3 and i8 models. (2) In addition, Insider Car News says the i5 will combine design aspects of the upcoming 2016 7-Series high-end luxury car -- which has not yet been revealed -- and proportions may come from the German carmaker's 6-Series Gran Coupe. Under the hood, news and reviews report the use of a plug-in hybrid powertrain -- BMW's second-generation Power eDrive -- that may deliver as much as 640 horsepower (218-hp from the gasoline engine, 150 from the front electric motor and 272 from the rear one). Consumers may also anticipate an electric-only range of between 50 (1) and 65 miles, according to various reports in the auto industry. (2)

As for pricing, Autoweek says the i5 could go for as much as 100,000 Euro, or approximately $112,000 USD if the exchange rate in 2018 remains the same as it is today. (2)
