Since 1978, Dr. Ito has served as the medical officer of the National Institutes of Health, one of the world's foremost medical research centers. Additionally, he holds patents for coil planet centrifuge, rotating-seal-free, flow-through centrifuge, pH-zone-refining countercurrent chromatography and centrifugal precipitation chromatography. Dr. Ito's areas of competency have been defined by the roles in which he has succeeded throughout his career. After interning at US Yokosuka Naval Hospital and completing residencies in pathology at the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital and Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Ill., he worked as an instructor of physiology at Osaka City University Medical School and a visiting scientist for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
In recognition of professional excellence spanning six decades, Dr. Ito was the recipient of a first place award for his presentation at Cleveland Metropolitan Hospital's annual science research conference. He was the recipient of a technical excellence award in 1979 and again in 2010, and he spearheaded a research travel fund grant proposal that was awarded to him by the National Institute of Medical Research in London.
