John Merow, born in Little Valley, NY, attended UCLA, graduated from the University of Michigan (BS in Engineering) in 1952, served as an officer in the U.S. Navy 1952-1955 and is a graduate of Harvard Law School (JD). He joined Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City as an associate in 1958, became a partner in the firm in 1964 and vice chairman in 1986, served as chairman and senior partner 1987-1994 and continues as senior counsel.
Mr. Merow is a trustee of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the Municipal Art Society of New York and the Archbishop of Canterbury's global investment and grants organizations, a director and the secretary of the United States Council for International Business and senior managing director of Brock Capital Group LLC. He is a former director of Aleris International, Commonwealth Industries, Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp., Seligman Group Investment Companies, Foreign Policy Association, Rio Tinto affiliates, Metropolitan Opera Club, American Australian Association and Australia and New Zealand business and cultural groups. He was named an honorary Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for service to United States-Australia relations.
Mr. Merow is a member of the American Law Institute, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Economic Club of New York, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Links Club, the Piping Rock Club, the Down Town Association, the Union Club, the Griffis Faculty Club, and the River Club.
