Though he retired from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) in 2008 after 43 years of teaching and research, Professor Emeritus Gamer continues academic engagement.
KANSAS CITY, MO, July 14, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Robert Emanuel Gamer has been included in Marquis Who's Who As with all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are taken into account during the selection process. Dr. Gamer was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Politics and Who's Who in the Midwest.
Salutatorian of Monmouth High School and Monmouth College, and Phi Beta Kappa from Brown University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1964, Dr. Gamer became the first American lecturer in political science at the University of Singapore. Granted independence in 1963 as part of Malaysia, Singapore broke away in 1965 as Lee Kuan Yew's People's Action Party began the reforms that propelled Singapore into the economic dynamo it is today. A charter member of SPUR, Singapore Planning and Urban Research Group, and with complete access to the files of the Housing and Urban Development Board, Dr. Gamer chronicled the start of that growth in his first book, The Politics of Urban Development in Singapore. His second, The Developing Nations, benefitted from his extensive travel and interactions with scholars and political leaders during those four years; it set forth a unique political economy model and was adopted in more than 100 schools worldwide.
Though he retired from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) in 2008 after 43 years of teaching and research, Professor Emeritus Gamer continues academic engagement. He is currently working on the fifth edition of his Understanding Contemporary China, and organizing this fall's Beijing symposium of the Edgar Snow Memorial Foundation, of which he is past president. He has donated his family's papers to the National Holocaust Museum and UMKC's Miller Nichols Library and is helping organize them. An early participant in American University's Washington Semester Program, President's Scholar of the Experiment in International Living, Interpretive Park Ranger at Mesa Verde National Park, a national trustee of Interfuture, and participant in the Copenhagen Seminar for Social Progress as part of the millennium gathering of the heads of state, and much more, he continues to explore fast-changing places and processes.
