Mr. Kappes embarked on his profession more than 67 years ago, graduating cum laude from Butler University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1945. He went on to earn a Doctor of Laws three years later from the University of Michigan, and passed the Indiana State Bar that same year. He has been very active since as an officer and Board Member of the Indiana and Indianapolis Bar Associations and member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association. He began his career as an associate with Armstrong and Gause and C.B. Dutton and later as a partner with Dutton, Kappes & Overman. He went on to serve as "Of Counsel" with this same firm until 1985. Since 1985 he has been a partner of Lewis Kappes Fuller & Eads, now Lewis Kappes, and the Creston Group. Additionally, he held the positions of president and director of K&K Realty, Inc. and manager of Labeco Properties LLC.

He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the Indiana State Bar Association, the Indiana Bar Foundation, the Indianapolis Bar Association, the American Judicature Society, the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society, the Butler University Alumni Association, and the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite. Additionally, he sat on the Board of Trustees of Butler University and served as the first chairman of the Ovid Butler Society.
Mr. Kappes was named among Legendary Lawyers of the Year in 2006, and was presented with the Professionalism Award from the Indianapolis Bar Association in 2014. He has been honored with several awards over the course of his career, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award, Mortar Award, the Butler medal by the Butler University Alumni Association, the Silver Beaver Award, and one of 100 Distinguished Scouts of Indiana over the past 100 years from the Crossroads Council, BSA and the Paul H. Buchanan Award of Excellence by the Indianapolis Bar Foundation. Additionally, the National Council, BSA named Mr. Kappes A Distinguished Eagle Scout and James E. West Fellow. He was also featured in Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in the World.
