Since 2006, Dr. Nguyen has demonstrated an expertise in all areas of nuclear medicine. At the department of radiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, he utilizes small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose and determine the severity of, or to treat, a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, heart disease, gastrointestinal, endocrine, neurological disorders and other abnormalities within the body. His key areas of competency and specialty include radioiodine treatment of benign thyroid diseases and differentiated thyroid cancer, SPECT/CT, PET/CT, and PET/MRI as part of clinical nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. His clinical and research interests include neurological and oncological PET/CT and PET/MRI as well as digital PET technology. He contributed to the clinical validation of the digital PET prototype (aka Direct Photon Counting technology) from Philips Healthcare, published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine in 2015 (doi: 10.2967/jnumed.114.148338). Through his roles as academic physician, with dual appointment at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Dr. Nguyen is able to have a significant influence on his patients' care. Previous to his current role, he acted as an assistant professor of radiology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
Dr. Nguyen has co-authored more than 30 publications in the field of nuclear medicine and radiology. Board certified in nuclear medicine, Dr. Nguyen attributes his success to his education. A graduate of the Eberhard-Karls University in Tübingen, Germany, he holds an MD and a Ph.D. He completed a PET fellowship at Saint Louis University, and also completed a research fellowship at Case Western University focused on digital PET and PET/MRI technologies. Dr. Nguyen continues in his professional development through his affiliations with the Radiological Society of North America and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. A nuclear medicine physician and contributor to research and publications, Dr. Nguyen intends to continue working in nuclear medicine and radiology in the years to come.
