Hal Kurfehs had a strong business foundation prior to entering the commercial real estate and development field. Armed with an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, he spent a few decades in advertising, marketing, and general management. Starting as a Product Manager, then as an Account Executive, he handled clients such as The American Tobacco Company, General Foods, Proctor & Gamble, Texaco, Philip Morris, Royal Crown Cola, and American Cyanamid.
Later Kurfehs was Vice President, Director of Marketing, for Meta-Language Products, Inc., a NYC computer software/systems company, Director of Advertising & Public Relations, and a member of the Board for Ethan Allen, Inc. furniture company, and Vice President & General Manager for Reed Ltd., a multi-national company, where he managed two divisions that contained three companies.
Kurfehs then acquired a catalog specialty book business, and as President & CEO, expanded the number of categories, enlarged the market from national to international, set up a fulfillment operation, stocked and promoted the world's most extensive number of titles in each category, and significantly improved the quality of the catalogs whereby customers would await new catalogs with great enthusiasm.
In some of these endeavors, especially in later years, Kurfehs handled real estate transactions as part of the operations and he found it to be a pleasurable pursuit--this led to his involvement in commercial real estate as a full-time career.
His belief is that success is the direct result of knowledge and drive. Thus, he has been a volunteer in Land Use, Planning, and Economic Development, for at least 20 years. More specifically, he served as Vice Chairman of the Brookfield Planning Commission for 10 years, Chairman of the Brookfield Economic Development Commission for the last 9 years, and Chairman of the Western Connecticut Economic Development Alliance (WCEDA) for the last 5 years. Time spent on WCEDA has been especially fruitful in that they produced a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the region that consists of 10 municipalities in northern Fairfield County and southern Litchfield County. Just recently, WCEDA developed a regional website to promote the region to outside businesses and to provide helpful data and insights to existing companies.
The Western Connecticut Council of Governments is being expanded to include the additional 8 municipalities of southwest Fairfield County and Kurfehs is on the Advisory Board to establish a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy for that region as well.
Kurfehs has contributed dozens of articles to professional journals and newspapers, and has been a speaker at Economic Development and Commercial Real Estate conferences sponsored by the Connecticut Economic Resource Center, Connecticut Business & Industry Association, UConn, The Stamford Chamber of Commerce, and The Construction Institute.
Kurfehs stays at the top of his field by affiliating with a number of professional organizations in his industry. He was President and Director of the statewide Commercial-Investment Division (CID) of the Connecticut Association of Realtors, and President in the Greater Danbury Region. He was on a Steering Committee to investigate and plan the establishment of a statewide organization that would promote Connecticut to the outside world and to act as a clearing house for commercial real estate opportunities within the state. This later became the Connecticut Economic Resource Center (CERC).
Additionally, Kurfehs has participated in many career-related initiatives, including roles as a lecturer for the Ancell School of Business at Western Connecticut State University, chairman of Real Estate United Way of Northern Fairfield County and as a Corporator and Advisory Board member for Fairfield County Bank. As he looks to the future, Kurfehs intends to continue offering top-of-the-line real estate services.
