An alumnus of Pittsburg State University, Gary Hevel earned a Bachelor of Science in 1969. That same year, he began his career as a museum specialist with the Department of Entomology, and went on to serve as a collections manager and public information officer until 2011. Throughout his career, Mr. Hevel served as a consultant for the U.S. military, Dorling Kindersley, the Fish & Wildlife Department, Orkin Exterminating Co., the USA Weekend Magazine, the IMAX Co., and Andrew Stewart Publications.
Currently a research collaborator for the Smithsonian Institution, Mr. Hevel has discovered some 400 new insect species and holds the world record for kinds of insects collected at a residence. In fact, he has collected insects in 24 countries and territories. Mr. Hevel's pictures appeared in the book, "Magnificent Foragers," and he has acted as a tarantula wrangler for National Geographic Explorer Adventurer Magazine. He was featured in the Washington Post, USA Today and other newspapers, and was interviewed by BBC, CBS, CNN, National Public Radio, Spanish television, Chinese television, Wisconsin Public Radio, and the London Daily Telegraph. Additionally, he contributed articles to professional journals and was featured in three museum documentaries.
Mr. Hevel remains current in his field through his affiliations with the Coleopterists Society, the New York Entomological Society, the Entomological Society of Washington, the Entomological Society of America, and the Kansas Entomological Society. He has been featured in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
