Mr. Smittle began his journey in the world of education in the '60s as a student at the University of Cincinnati. There, he achieved two bachelor's degrees: one in science and the other in fine arts, as well as a Master of Arts. Further, Mr. Smittle holds a certification in permanent teaching in the state of Ohio. He is currently a military analyst, artist, and educator, and holds more than 50 years of experience. Serving as a commissioned second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1962, Mr. Smittle was transferred to the U.S. Air Force in 1970 and retired in 1994 as a commissioned colonel.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Smittle has held a variety of positions, including staff officer with the U.S. Army Photo Agency of the Pentagon, art instructor at the University of Cincinnati, director of operations and fixed communications for the Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, director of information systems at AWACS in Saudi Arabia, commander of the engineering installation division at the Tinker Air Force Base, and many more.
In 1972, Mr. Smittle began his career in education with the Princeton City School District. Since then, has served as an art history instructor at Cincinnati State Tech. & Community College, lecturer at Mount St. Joseph University, and visiting professor of fine arts at Xavier University. Additionally, he has acted as a military analyst for several radio stations, including WWNC AM Radio, 700 WLW AM Radio, and WNKU FM Radio. He now serves as the president of Thumbs Up Aerospace Art, a position he has held since 1998.
Mr. Smittle is the published author of "Famous Moments in Aerospace History" and "Thumbs Up America," Americans at War" Volumes 1 through 4, A Current History of America's Longest War, Battlespace, 2015 He has exhibited in group shows at the Museum of Flight, the Midland Arts Center, the Master Works Exhibit, the Cincinnati Museum Center, and the Museum Aviation. Additionally, he created the cover art for the Journal of League of World War I Aviation Historians, and the Journal WWI Aviation Historians. Mr. Smittle holds a decorated commendation medal and was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal by the Department Defense in 1986 and 1991 and was also awarded "Master Jump Wings," by the U.S. Air Force, as a squadron commander, 302nd Special Operations Group. He was also inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in 2010, and the O'Charley's "Hero" program in 2015.
In order to remain current with trends in his field, Mr. Smittle maintains affiliations with the VFW, DAV, the Military Officers Association of America, the American Society of Aviation Artists, the Reserve Officers Association, the Air Force Association, Cincinnati Warbirds, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, the 82d Airborne Association, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was also been named an honorary member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
