Mr. Nicholas is an accomplished painter who works primarily with oils and watercolor. His work is available through his own gallery, the Tom Nicholas Gallery in Rockport, Mass., as well as the Argosy Gallery in Bar Harbor, Maine. Mr. Nicholas has paintings displayed at the Butler Institute of American Art, the Georgia Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Hispanic Society of America Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum and the Springfield Art Museum. His paintings have also appeared in major exhibitions in New York, Washington, California, and throughout New England.
From 1950 to 1953, Mr. Nicholas began honing his skills while studying under the internationally renowned artist, Ernst Lohrmann. He then obtained a scholarship to study at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, followed by a Greenshields Grant, which allowed him to paint independently both abroad and in the U.S. for two years. With this foundation, he has achieved not only having his own gallery and his work on display nationally, but has been able to complete several works on commission as well. Mr. Nicholas has completed four 10-colored lithographs for The Franklin Mint and 80 images for the Smithsonian Institution, among other projects. His work as also appeared in a number of art publications.
Mr. Nicholas has also utilized his talents in teaching capacities. He was an instructor at the Famous Artists School in Westport, Conn., and ran many art workshops in Rockport, Mass. and Carmel, Calif. His professional affiliations include The Guild of Boston Artists, Boston, Mass, National Academy of Design and Museum, Allied Artists of America, the American Watercolor Society, the New England Watercolor Society, the Guild of Boston Artists, and Hudson Valley Artists. Several of these organizations have recognized his skill in art with various honors and awards. Mr. Nicholas has also been featured in the 23rd through 36th editions of Who's Who in American Art and the 33rd through 43rd editions of Who's Who in the East. He has appeared in numerous editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
