Over the course of his career, which has spanned six decades, Dr. Godfrey has made a tremendous impact on the medical community as a chemist. He has achieved more than 59 patents and is credited with creating and enhancing the formulation to deliver active zinc in the treatment of the common cold. "In the early 1980s I learned of the effect of orally-delivered ionic zinc on the common cold. After doing much research I came up with a unique solution to the severe adverse taste and nausea problem, rendering the treatment generally useful, leading to U.S. and multiple foreign patents," he says, adding that the resulting product entered the U.S. market as "Cold-EEZE" in 1994, with general national availability in 1996 and worldwide distribution beginning in 1997. He continues research to elucidate ionic zinc's mechanisms of action. Dr. Godfrey is also nationally recognized for inventing the Godfrey Stereomodels, which uniquely demonstrate mechanisms of formation, properties and reactions.
Successful largely because of his passion for the field of science, Dr. Godfrey achieved a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Rochester following his achievement of a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Pomona College. With a reputation of excellence and reliability, he has held a number of prestigious roles over the years. Among them, he was a research chemist for Shell Development, instructor of chemistry at Rutgers University, and assistant director of clinical research for both Bristol Laboratories and Revlon Health Care. He also served as an associate director of CR at Rorer Pharmaceuticals. Since 1979, Dr. Godfrey has worked at the helm of his own firm, Godfrey Science & Design. In 1990, he expanded the practice to include consulting services in order to share his expertise and serve as a mentor to other scientific professionals and organizations.
Dr. Godfrey has contributed more than 60 articles to professional journals and 53 articles to professional publications. Noting that he is a proponent of continued development, he is tremendously involved with his professional community. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Microbiology and the American Chemical Society. As he looks to the future, Dr. Godfrey intends to continue consulting and researching in the field of medicinal chemistry.
