Mr. Olsen is a nationally recognized and award-winning artist and educator. Over the course of his career, which began in 1966, he has been represented by the Maurine Littleton Gallery, the Miriam Perlman Gallery, EDL & Associates, Elements of Art, Ellen Wallace-Paushter, and recently with Novus, Mercury Artworks and now with TEW Galleries. His drawings and paintings utilize a personal expressionistic and abstract style and often depict specific imagery related to the Vietnam landscape, aerial flight, moonlight and sunlight and studio interior. He was the recipient of a visual arts fellowship from the Southern Arts Federation, a merit award for three works in the 29th Juried Exhibition at the Lyndon House Arts Center, and a purchase award from the 8th annual Maine/Maritime International Flatworks Exhibition. Mr. Olsen was also selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
As an educator, Mr. Olsen has worked at the intermediate, secondary and higher education levels. Concluding his career as a professor at the University of Georgia, he also served as a teaching assistant at the University of Wisconsin, art teacher for grade 8 at Winnequah Grade School, instructor of printmaking at the Operating Area Arts Center, instructor of painting and drawing at the University of Georgia, and general Sandy Beaver Professorship at the University of Georgia. Mr. Olsen is also regarded for taking on additional career-related projects, including work as a wrestling coach at Monona Grove High School, panelist for the Steinham Arts Festival at St. Lawrence University in New York, head preparatoire of the Reflexes and Reflections exhibit at Russell Rotunda Capitol Hill and speaker at Crossroads in Cultural Studies in Tampere, Finland.
Mr. Olsen has exhibited at countless galleries over the years. His most prominent showings have taken place at the Claywork Gallery, the H. Smith Gallery at the University of South Carolina, the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago, the Mercury Art Works, the Floataway Complex in Atlanta, the New Space Gallery at the Augusta State University, the Monroe Art Guild and the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art. He was featured most recently in group shows at the Peace Museum in Chicago, the Aurora Public Art Center, the University of New Mexico, the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, the Athens Academy, Neville Public Museum, and the Georgia Museum of Art. When queried about his professional achievements, Mr. Olsen attributed his success to his true passion for art, as well as his talent and the education he received prior to establishing his career. After earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1958, he went on to obtain an MFA in painting and printmaking in 1966.
