For the last 43 years, Dr. Kwan has been specializing in eye and vision care as an ophthalmologist in the state of California. A diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, he currently serves as a clinical professor for the department of ophthalmology at UCLA, a role that he has held since 1995. Previously, he was the chief of service of ophthalmology and a partner of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. Actively involved in his professional community, Dr. Kwan is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the Chinese American Ophthalmological Society, for which he served as president for two years and now acts as executive vice president, a role he has held since 2011. He was also a member of the Chinese Physician's Society of Southern California, for which he acted as president. Dr. Kwan was also the president of the LA chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans.
When queried about his achievements, Dr. Kwan credited his passion for helping his patients achieve optimal eye and vision health care. In recognition of his success, he was the recipient of a Proclamation Award from the California Secretary of State, a Service Award from the East LA Chinese Everspring Senior Citizen Association, and a Service Award from the Chinese American Ophthalmological Society. He also received a Pioneer Award in 2015 from the Chinese American Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Kwan was also selected for inclusion in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Kwan is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned an MD in 1967. As he looks to the future, he intends to continue teaching at the higher education level to help inspire and prepare the ophthalmologists of tomorrow.
