After graduating from Princeton University in 1948, Dr. Adams went on to earn a Master of Arts and Ph.D. from the University of Washington. It was with this strong educational foundation that he embarked upon an impressive and lengthy career in academia, starting as an instructor at Cornell University. Dr. Adams soon advanced to the role of assistant professor, and taught at the University of Texas before taking on a visiting associate professor position at Washington University of St. Louis. From there, he progressed from associate professor to full professor at Michigan State University. During his time at Michigan State, Dr. Adams traveled to Trinity College to serve one year as a Fulbright lecturer.
Dr. Adams then traveled to the University of California, Irvine, where he founded and chaired the school's English Department. He remained at the university from 1964 to 1977, teaching and fulfilling the roles of dean of the School of Humanities, vice chancellor of academy affairs, and co-founder and co-director of the School of Criticism and Theory. In 1977, Dr. Adams departed to spend the next two decades at his alma mater, the University of Washington. He became a respected member of the school community, serving as a professor of English and comparative literature. In 1988, he was named Byron W. and Alice L. Lockwood professor of humanities in comparative literature.
Having been a professor emeritus of the University of Washington since 1997, Dr. Adams maintains his notability worldwide as an esteemed scholar of the writers William Blake, W.B. Yeats, and Joyce Cary. He is also lauded for his expertise in the history of criticism. Along with his career in academia, Dr. Adams has a large repertoire of writings on his areas of expertise dating back to the early 1950s. Some of his most recent publications include the books "Thinking through Blake: Essays in Literary Contrariety," published in 2014, "The Day the Dogs Talked," published in 2011, and "William Blake on His Poetry and Painting: A Study of a Descriptive Catalogue, Other Prose Writings and Jerusalem," published in 2010. In addition to writing or editing over thirty books, Dr. Adams has written for and edited a number of professional journals.
Dr. Adams is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was named a Guggenheim fellow in 1974. He is a member of the honor society Phi Beta Kappa as well. In recognition of his many accomplishments, Dr. Adams was chosen to be featured in the 44th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 7th and 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, the 28th through 43rd editions of Who's Who in the West, and the 32nd and 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World. In 1991, he appeared in the 1st edition of the student version of Who's Who in America.
