A professor emeritus of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Bowie has major achievements throughout his academic career. He originally joined the University of Minnesota in 1989 as the Elmer L. Andersen Chair in Corporate Responsibility with a joint appointment in the Departments of Philosophy and Strategic Management and Organization.
During his tenure at Minnesota, Dr. Bowie served as chair of the Strategic Management and Organization Department from 1992-1995. He spent his sabbatical in 1996-1997 as a Fellow at the Center for Ethics and the Professions at Harvard University. In 1999-2000 he was Dixons Professor of Business Ethics and Social Responsibility at the London Business School.
Throughout his career Dr. Bowie has been an active researcher authoring, editing or co-editing 19 books and 100 articles. He is best known for applying the ethical theory of Immanuel Kant to business ethics. His most recent books include Business Ethics in the 21st Century (2013) and Business Ethics for Dummies (2011). From 2005-2009, he was Associate Editor of Business Ethics Quarterly. In 2009, Dr. Bowie was awarded a Career of Outstanding Scholarly Achievement Award by the Society of Business Ethics.
A 1964 graduate of Bates College, he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Rochester in 1968. He began his academic career at Lycoming College in 1968 and then accepted an appointment at Hamilton College in 1969, where in 1972 he became Executive Secretary of the American Philosophical Association. He and the American Philosophical Association moved to a permanent home at the University of Delaware in 1976. In 1997 Dr. Bowie became the Director of the Center for the Study of Values at the University of Delaware until his appointment at the University of Minnesota.
In retirement Dr. Bowie has remained active. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland. A greatly revised second edition of his 1999 Business Ethics: A Kantian Perspective is being published in 2017. He remains a member of the Business Ethics Quarterly editorial board. Dr. Bowie's community commitment involves being president of the West Hurley Library Board of Trustees.
Dr. Bowie's professional affiliations include the Academy of Management, The American Philosophical Association, and Phi Beta Kappa. He is a past president of the Society for Business Ethics and the American Society for Value Inquiry. These and Dr. Bowie's other achievements were taken into consideration when he was chosen to be featured in the 44th through 70th edition of Who's Who in America, the 7th and 8th edition of Who's Who in American Education, the 39th through 44th edition of Who's Who in the East, and the 27th through 37th edition of Who's Who in the Midwest. He also appeared in several editions of Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Finance and Business.
