Ms. Olian is a curator, painter, and New York native with a passion for fashion and costume. Since 1995, she has been curator emeritus of the Costume Collection at the Museum of the City of New York. She joined the museum as assistant curator in 1974 and was named curator in 1975. Previously, Ms. Olian completed a graduate internship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
In 1972, Ms. Olian received a Master of Arts from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. She attended Syracuse University and received a Bachelor of Arts from Hofstra University. Ms. Olian has communicated her knowledge and experience as a lecturer at The Parsons School of Design in New York City and Paris. Ms. Olian has also served as an associate trustee of the Nassau County Museum of Art, and has curated a number of its exhibits including Iris Apfel: Rare Bird of Fashion, Garden Party and Art and Fashion.
A skilled writer, Ms. Olian has compiled and edited a number of publications on the art of fashion history. She is the author of "The House of Worth: The Gilded Age, 1860 to 1918," published in 1982, "Wedding Fashions, 1862-1912: 380 Costume Designs from La Mode Illustree," published in 1994, "Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from La Mode Illustree," published in 1997, and "Everyday Fashions of the Sixties As Pictured in Sears Catalogs," published in 1998, among a number of other books. Many of her published works are available on Amazon.com. Ms. Olian has contributed articles to professional journals and chapters to books as well.
Ms. Olian is a member of the costume committee of the International Council of Museums, a past director of the Costume Society of America, and a past member of the board of directors of the Fashion Group. Her further affiliations include the Cosmopolitan Club and Le Centre International des Textiles Anciens. Ms. Olian's achievements were featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women.
She resides in New York City and Sarasota, Florida, and has two daughters and one granddaughter.
