The field of toxicology is challenging since there are approximately 80,000 to 100,000 chemicals in commercial use, but there is limited knowledge and data on health effects and associated potential risks on the vast majority of these. His work over the last four decades has established him as an internationally respected toxicologist, risk assessor, researcher and public health service official. He is now taking on a new venture, the formation and growth of the consulting firm Toxicology and Risk Assessment Consulting Services (TRACS).
Along with his partner, Dr. Babasaheb (Bob) Sonawane, the company will provide a variety of consulting services in toxicology and health risk assessment of environmental agents. Their clients include the Federal and State Government, nonprofit and private organizations at both the national and international levels.
These services include but are not limited to reviewing literature, peer review of published reports and articles, teaching toxicology and risk assessment courses, conducting health risk assessments of environmental agents and food contaminants. TRACS will also provide advice on toxicology of metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic as well as organic chemicals such as formaldehyde, benzene, phthalates and flame retardants. Furthermore, TRACS will provide expertise on the health safety of dietary supplements and nano-particles used in a variety of products.
Over the course of his professional career, Dr. Fowler has served as an editor and writer of many published articles and books in the field of Toxicology and Risk Assessment. He authored "Molecular Biological Markers for Toxicology and Risk Assessment" (June 2016). He was a co-editor of the 4th edition of "Handbook on the Toxicology of Metals" (2015). He edited "Computational Toxicology: Methods and Applications for Risk Assessment" (2013). Dr. Fowler holds a Ph.D. in Pathology from the University of Oregon. Among the professional organizations of which he is an active member are the Academy of Toxicological Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society of Toxicology, the Society for Risk Analysis, and the American College of Toxicology. He has been honored as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellow in Japan, a Fulbright Scholar and Swedish Medical Research Council Visiting Professor in Sweden. He is a member of the Fulbright Association and a Founding Member of the Fulbright 1946 Society. He has served on numerous committees, panels and working groups of State, National and International Agencies such as the State of Maryland, NAS/NRC, NIH, USEPA, WHO, IARC, US Pharmacopea and has recently been appointed to the FAO/WHO Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA).
Dr. Fowler is currently involved in charitable causes and work in his local community. He is President of the Rotary Club of North Bethesda, Maryland (July 2016-June 2017) where he was selected as Cornerstone Montgomery Volunteer of the Year in 2014 and Rotarian of the Year in 2015 for his work with disabled persons. Dr. Fowler's body of scientific work has also resulted in numerous formal honors over the years. These include awards from the Society of Toxicology, CDC/ATSDR and US Pharmacopea. He has been featured in the 47th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 6th through 12th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 1st edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
