Internationally renowned for her art, Ms. Durham specializes in abstract painting using universal symbols that demonstrate her interest in the mysteries of the universe. She has been involved with art since she was six, when her grandmother took her into the fields to paint. After a series of private lessons, Ms. Durham participated in her first art show in 1944, and was hooked. Her journey continued at Texas Woman's University at the University of Texas, Austin, and at Texas A&M University-Commerce, from which she graduated.
Now, Ms. Durham is proud of the legacy of excellence she has continued to leave on the art community. She has garnered a long history of participation in art shows, including the Woman's National Democratic Club NLAPW 2016 exhibition, the 2014 National League of American Pen Women Biennial, and the 2013 show at the Arlington Museum of Art. Ms. Durham's paintings have been featured in the Belgium Grand Prix for seven years, in Paris, France, in the US-France Show, Salon D'Automme for two years, and the Society International Dex Beaux Arts for two years. She has exhibited work in Gordes, France with the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media and her paintings were exhibited in the United Kingdom in the US-Wales Show at the Cynon Valley Museum in Aberdare and in Cardiff at St. John's College. Further, her work was published in the February 2016 issue of "Spirit of Experimental Art," the 2015 book, "Journeys to Abstraction," and the December 2001 edition of "Artist's Magazine," where she received an honorable mention in the experimental category of "The Year's Best Art," among many other publications. Jo Ann Durham's work has also been featured at the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Center, the Pen & Brush Club in New York, and the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media juried exhibit in Arkansas.
To give back to and connect with other members of her community, Ms. Durham maintains affiliation with organizations such as the Salmagundi Club, National League of American Pen Women and the International Society of Experimental Artists, of which she is a past president. She is also a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and the International Museum of Women in San Francisco, California.
In recognition of her continued success and talent, Ms. Durham was honored as a Distinguished Alumni of Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2015, earned the Samuel Leitman Memorial Award from the prestigious Salmagundi Club in 2006, and was featured in Who's Who in American Art. She was also the recipient of four grants as an artist-in-residence with the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Women in the Arts Recognition Award for her lifetime achievements from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Further, Ms. Durham's paintings are part of the permanent collections of the Fort Worth Public Library, Downtown, the Women's Club of Fort Worth, Texas A&M University-Tarleton, and Texas A&M University-Commerce, and all of her art shows are in the archives of the James Gilliam Gee Library at her alma mater.
