As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Known for her creativity, Prof. Lois Swirnoff's work on Color is recognized internationally. Her book "The Color of Cities; an International Perspective", published in 2000 by McGraw-Hill has been translated into Mandarin in Beijing. It received Honorable Mention for the best book on Architecture and Urban Studies that year from the Association of American Publishers. "Dimensional Color", her first book, now in its third edition, published by WWNorton, is known throughout the world. Most recently, her essay "Colour Contrast" has been published by Springer in "The Encyclopedia of Colour", on line.

Prof. Swirnoff prepared for her career in the arts by attending The Cooper Union School of Art in NY, graduating in 1951 with highest honors. Josef Albers, the former Bauhaus Master who widely influenced abstract art as well as art education, admitted her to his graduate program at Yale University, where she received the BFA and MFA Summa Cum Laude. She began her teaching career in 1954 as Instructor in Art at Wellesley College, has been Emerita Prof. of Art and Design at UCLA since 1990 after teaching there for thirteen years, Lecturer on Visual & Environmental Studies at Harvard University from 1968 to 1975, Chair of the Art Department at Skidmore College from 1977 to 1981, and was Adjunct Prof. in the Art School in 1991, then the Feltman Chair in Light at Cooper Union, retiring in 2003. Since then she has lectured in Bergen, Norway, Helsinki, Finland, Stockholm, Sweden, meetings of the AIC in Granada, Spain and at University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

Throughout the past six decades Swirnoff has exhibited her creative work in solo shows such as the Farnsworth Art Museum, The National Academy of Sciences, Swetzoff Gallery in Boston, Galley BAI in NY, Hathorn Gallery, Skidmore College "The Color of Cities" at New York School of Interior Design, and in many group shows in galleries and museums in the U.S. and abroad.

In celebration of her achievements, Ms. Swirnoff has been awarded the Erskine Hewitt Award from Cooper Union in 1951, the Fulbright Fellowship to Italy for Painting, in 1951-1952, the Mary I. Bunting Fellowship of Radcliff in Painting, in 1961-1962, Yaddo Fellowships in 1985 and 1987, and Graham Foundation Grant for her book, Dimensional Color. Swirnoff has been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. Her most recent achievement, a grant from the IIDA, enabled her to design and build a large scale installation of color as light, with students at Parsons School of Design; an aspect of sequential contrast of color in time, a phenomenon that continues to engage her.
