As a professor of history, Ms. Madden has been continually recognized for her dedication to historical studies, particularly in the area of Ukrainian history. Among other honors, she was the keynote speaker at the Soyuz Ukrainok Holodomor Commemorative Event in 2003, and was decorated with the Order Princess Olha Medal in 2008. The Order Princess Olha Medal is the highest civilian honorary decoration presented to a woman by the Ukrainian government. Ms. Madden traveled to the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, DC, for the ceremony, at which she was decorated by the First Lady of Ukraine Kateryna Yushchenko. In addition, Ms. Madden has been featured in a wide variety of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Women, and Who's Who in the World. She maintains active involvement with the Shevchenko Scientific Society, Inc., Phi Alpha Theta, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is a regular participant in online forums, addressing matters of history and politics, often in poetic format.
Ms. Madden has addressed audiences across the U.S. and in Canada on the topic of the Stalinist Genocide, The Holodomor of 1932-33. To conduct primary source interviews, she has traveled to Ukraine, Australia, and Russia. In November 2015, she proudly attended the unveiling of the U.S. Holodomor Monument in Washington, DC.
While pursuing her formal education in the field of history, Ms. Madden became a certified researcher through the National Archives & Records Administration in 1999. She began her career in 2002, upon receiving a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Rhode Island, Kingston. Ms. Madden went on to attend Providence College, where she received a Master of Arts in Modern European History in 2004. During this time, she also worked as an annotated bibliographer for Shevchenko Scientific Society, Inc. Since then, Ms. Madden has worked as an adjunct professor at local colleges, including the Community College of Rhode Island, and Rhode Island College.
In addition to her career as a professor, Ms. Madden is a respected writer in the areas of Eastern European history, the history of World War II, cyber security, and the history and politics of 20th century Ukraine. She has contributed articles to professional journals throughout the course of her career, in addition to serving as a guest editor for the Canadian-American Slavic Studies Holodomor Commemorative Editions in 2003 and 2008. Ms. Madden was the recipient of the Yuri Kuziv Grant from Shevchenko Scientific Society, Inc., in 2002, 2003 and 2008; as well as the Michael P. Metcalf Grant from the Rhode Island Foundation, in 1999. Deeply committed to her community, Ms. Madden was previously the co-chair of the Parents Advisory Committee for Special Education in Charlestown, RI, between 1980 and 1986.
