After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College and just before earning a Master of Science from Syracuse University, Mr. Brooks began in the industry with Station WTEN-TV in Albany as a promotion assistant. After two years in that role, he became a sales promotion supervisor with Station WCBS-TV in New York City from 1969 to 1970, and a senior research analyst for the NBC Owned Stations Division from 1970 to 1972. He then moved to NBC-TV Network in the roles of manager of ratings research, director of television network research, and director of program research between 1972 and 1988, during which time he also served as an adjunct professor of communications at Long Island University. From 1976 to 1977, he switched over to TV Advertising Reps., Inc., as the assistant director of research and marketing, but quickly returned to NBC.
With many years of broadcast and communications experience with NBC behind him, Mr. Brooks began as N.W. Ayer Inc.'s senior vice president and media research director from 1989 until 1990. A year later, he started with USA Networks as their vice president of research - a position he held for three years, before becoming their senior vice president of research for six years. Lifetime TV also made use of his array of skills from 2000 to 2007 through his roles as the senior vice president of research and executive vice president of research.
As a leader in the media field, Mr. Brooks has been affiliated with the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, the Advertising Research Foundation, the Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau, the TV Association Programmers of Latin America, and the Council for Research Excellence, where he is a founding member. He has won a variety of awards throughout his career, including the Jack Hill Award for Excellence and Integrity in Media Research from the Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau in 1995. In addition, he was honored to be featured in Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
