Mr. Washington has been a textbook author since 1964. Originally with Addison-Wesley Publishers he is presently with Pearson Publishers. Books that he has published include "Basic Technical Mathematics," the 10th edition of which was published in 2013, "Basic Technical Mathematics with Calculus," the 10th edition of which was also published in 2013, and "Introduction to Technical Mathematics," the 5th edition of which was published in 2007. Earlier publications include the 4th edition of "Technical Calculus with Analytic Geometry," published in 2002. His original editions of "Basic Technical Mathematics with Calculus" and "Technical Calculus with Analytic Geometry" were published in 1964 and 1966, respectively.
Prior to starting his career penning academic textbooks, Mr. Washington served his country in the U.S. Army. He then earned a Bachelor of Science from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., followed by a Master of Science from Brown University. He began his working life in academia as an instructor at his alma mater, Trinity College, before becoming an instructor at Boise Junior College. For 21 years, he worked as a professor at Dutchess Community College, where he was acting executive dean from 1974 to 1975. In 2000, the school's Allyn J. Washington Center for Science and Art was named in his honor.
Mr. Washington is a past president of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges; he received an award for exemplary service from the organization in 1978. He is also affiliated with the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, the Mathematical Association of America, and Phi Beta Kappa. In 2011, Mr. Washington was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the State University of New York. His many accomplishments were considered when he was chosen to be featured in the 60th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, as well as the 24th, 26th and 27th editions of Who's Who in the World.
