A revered attorney in the Chicagoland region, Mr. Sternstein has been practicing law since 1977. With a focus on intellectual property law, he has successfully represented countless clients in matters of securing and enforcing legal rights to inventions, designs and artistic works. Since 2013 Mr. Sternstein has served as the assistant director of the National IP Division and is head of IP Litigation at Lathrop and Gage. Since 2015 Mr. Sternstein has also served as the Executive Director of the IP and Entrepreneurship Clinic at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law. Previously, he gained prominence in roles, including partner and director of IP and IP litigation for Dykema Gossett, managing partner of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, Division Patent Counsel of Abbott Laboratories, partner of Neuman Williams, Anderson & Olson, and patent agent for Sunbeam Corporation. During his tenure, Mr. Sternstein has also shared his insights and expertise as an adjunct professor of law. He has taught courses in Patent Law and Patent Litigation at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, the University of Illinois College of Law, Oxford University, the University of Victory, DePaul University School of Law, and the John Marshall School of Law.
In the 1970s, Mr. Sternstein served as a legal advisor for the Legal Aid Society in Chicago and at the public defender's office, later serving as a committee chairman of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago in 1982. Today, he continues to give back to his professional community through his active involvement with the American Bar Association, the Intellectual Property Owners Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Chicago Bar Association. He also contributes articles to professional journals on the topic of intellectual property litigation.
Mr. Sternstein established his career after graduating from Loyola University Law School with a JD, the University of Michigan with a Master of Science and the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science. He was admitted to the bar to practice in front of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 1974, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in 1977, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio in 1977, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in 1986, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan in 1990, the U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals in 1978, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 1979, the U.S. Court Appeals for the Federal Circuit in 1982, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin in 2003, the U.S. Court Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in 2003, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in 2007.
