Dr. Calhoun Winton Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Academia

Dr. Winton contributed to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography



He is currently a professor emeritus at the University of Maryland, a position which he has held for nearly two decades.

    SEWANEE, TN, December 01, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Calhoun Winton has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. In terms of academic achievement, Dr. Winton has accumulated impressive credentials. After studying at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1946, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the South in 1948. He continued to make academic and intellectual progress, and earned two master's degrees, one from Vanderbilt University and the other from Princeton University. He ultimately earned a doctorate in 1955 from Princeton University.

Dr. Winton spent three of his career as an instructor at Dartmouth College, moving on to become an assistant professor at the University of Virginia in 1957. From 1960 to 1967, he worked at the University of Delaware, progressing from assistant professor to associate professor and, ultimately, assistant dean of the graduate school. His career continued to develop, and he went on to work as a professor in the English department of the University of South Carolina, chairman at the same, professor at the University of Maryland and director of the Research Center for Humanities at the University of Maryland. He is currently a professor emeritus at the University of Maryland, a position which he has held for nearly two decades. Notably, Dr. Winton also served his country as a captain in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1967.

Due to his academic excellence, Dr. Winton has been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the West. He was honored as an American Philosophical Society grantee in 1960, a Guggenheim Foundation fellow from 1965 to 1966, a Folger Shakespeare Library fellow in 1970 and a Fulbright Commission Lecture grantee from 1979 to 1980. He has also participated as a member in many notable societies, such as the Modern Language Association, the Literary Society of Washington, the American Antiquarian Society and the Association of Princeton Graduate Alumni, among others. His academic contributions in the form of writing are copious: he penned a biography of Richard Steele, edited plays of Aaron Hill and contributed to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography in 2004.
