Miroslav Michael Djordjevich is the author of a new two-volume book about American and European Union involvement in the decade-long Yugoslav civil-ethnic-religious war "Decade of Illusions 1990-2000." This book, published in June 2016, has been enthusiastically received in his native country of Serbia, and is considered to be worthy of inclusion in educational study and as an important source for historical research of this period. The Library of Congress in Washington has included the book in its collections.
This fifth book is the latest endeavor from the energetic and entrepreneurial Californian who immigrated to the United States from Belgrade in 1956 and worked his way up from a manual laborer to banker, founder and leader of successful companies. He was also involved in a number of notable public services. Some of these achievements follow:
Mr. Djordjevich was formerly Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Capital Guaranty Corporation. Prior to that time, he also served as President and Chief Executive Officer of USF&G Financial Security Company which managed the financial guaranty business of USF&G Corporation.
In 1986, he founded Capital Guaranty Corporation, and its insurance subsidiary. After a conservative but successful growth under Mr. Djordjevich's leadership, Capital Guaranty became a public company and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1993. At the end of 1995, the Company merged with Financial Security Assurance of New York for strategic reasons. During 1996-97 he was with FSA as Vice Chairman.
In 1997, Mr. Djordjevich was the principal founder and former President and Chief Executive Officer of the Bank of Southeast Europe International, Inc., an offshore USA bank. The bank was established to help the transition to democracy and rebuilding the economies of Serbia and other parts of the Southeast European region. In the course of the 1992-1999 civil war in former Yugoslavia, Mr. Djordjevich was extensively involved at the highest level with the U.S government's attempts to first prevent and then end the war and to bring democracy to Serbia.
At the end of 2002, Bank of Southeast Europe International, Inc. acquired Razvojna Banka in Banja Luka, Bosnia-Herzegovina, as the first step of its strategic plan of expansion in the region. After successfully recapitalizing and restructuring Razvojna Banka, which received many recognitions and awards for its excellent performance, it was merged into a top Slovenian bank in 2005. Mr. Djordjevich is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of Monad Financial LLC, a family owned company in California.
His professional activities and recognitions include: past governor Municipal Bond Insurance Association, past director Association of Financial Guaranty Insurors, and American Express Variable Annuity Fund, Inc. In 1986, he served on the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Centennial Commission. For his efforts towards establishing democracy in Serbia, he was awarded the Medal of Yugoslav Flag (II Degree) by the President of Yugoslavia in 2003, and the Medal of Nemanja (II Degree) for "nurturing and expanding ties between the Serbian Diaspora and the Homeland and for selfless aid and humanitarian contributions to his people" (December 2005).
In addition, he has won a number of awards for various endeavors, such as the Excellence Award from the American Security Council in 1967, Americanism Medal (National Society Daughters of the American Revolution), a Merit Award from the Serbian American Bar Association in 2012, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 from the Tesla Foundation.
In 1990, he founded and was the first President of the Serbian Unity Congress. To support transition to democracy in Yugoslavia and peace and stability in the Balkans, Mr. Djordjevich established internationally the "Council for Democratic Changes in Serbia" in 1998 and was its first President. He is a former director, World Affairs Councils of America (2002-2004).
Mr. Djordjevich received a B.S. degree in banking and insurance from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.B.A. in international finance from San Francisco State University. He has completed additional studies in financial management at Stanford University, Graduate School of Business.
Throughout his notable career, Mr. Djordjevich has parlayed his knowledge and rich experience into numerous creative works, including his latest book "Decade of Illusions 1990 - 2000" published in 2016. He also penned "Pathways of a Yearning Soul," (poetry) in 2007; "Moral Society and the Modern State" in 2003; "Correspondence Miroslav Djordjevich and Dobrica Cosic" - a book that includes a large number of letters exchanged over a decade between Miroslav Djordjevich and Serbian foremost writer, philosopher, and president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Dobrosav "Dobrica" Cosic, about various world and Serbian issues, problems, and possible solutions, as well as philosophical discourses; "About Happy Living" - a book of metaphysical essays (1985).
