Widely regarded for his focus on physics education, Dr. Sebhatu has served as an educator for more than 40 years. He began a scientific career upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science in physics from Haile Selassie I University in 1969. From there, he attended Clemson University, where he received a Ph.D. in physics in 1975. Dr. Sebhatu has enjoyed numerous teaching positions with colleges throughout the United States, including North Carolina State University, Pensacola Junior College and Winthrop University, where he accepted a professor position in 1992. Since 2014, Dr. Sebhatu has been recognized as a professor emeritus with the university. A man of many accomplishments, he considers his greatest achievement to be the derivation of two-nucleon solitary wave exchange potentials.
Dr. Sebhatu is a published author in his fields of expertise and is in the process of writing a book on his work. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Sebhatu has contributed articles to professional journals and books pertaining to his areas of study. He was previously a textbook reviewer for Prentice Hall in 1987, Little Brown in 1989, and Jones and Bartlet in 2006. In an effort to stay abreast of recent developments in the field of physics, Dr. Sebhatu maintains involvement with the American Physical Society and American Association of Physics Teachers.
In recognition of his contributions to physics education and research, Dr. Sebhatu has received numerous awards. During the 1991-1992 academic year he was a King-Chavez-Parks Visiting Professor of Physics at Michigan State University where he authored a teaching module on the standard Model of Physics that is widely used. He is an inducted fellow of the African Science Institute, as well as a former scholar of the Kavli Institute on Theoretical Physics through the University of California. In addition, Dr. Sebhatu has received grants through the National Science Foundation and Cottrel Research Corporation. He has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in American and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Sebhatu was also selected for inclusion in the 1st edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 8th edition of Who's Who in American Education.
