BERKHAMSTED, ENGLAND, December 09, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Emeritus Professor Dr. Wallace Peters has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Peters' professional career began in 1947 when he gained the degree of Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery with double honours from St. Bartholomew's Hospital in the University of London. From 1948 to 1950 he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps in West Africa. In 1950 he received a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he later served as the Professor of Medical Protozoology (from 1979 to 1989). Between 1950 and 1960 Dr. Peters carried out field and laboratory research on parasitic diseases (mainly malaria and leishmaniasis) in the tropics, before joining a major pharmaceutical company in Basel, Switzerland. From then on he pioneered the development of novel antiparasitic drugs and combinations to impede the selection of resistance. In 1966 he was appointed the Walter Myers Professor of Parasitology in the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, from where he transferred in 1979 to the London School. There he served as Professor of Medical Protozoology until formal university retirement in 1989. While in Liverpool Dr, Peters gained from London University an MD and DSc based on his field and laboratory research from 1948 onwards. In 1992 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Universite Rene Descartes, Paris. Between 2000 and 2004 he held the honorary post of Research Professor in Imperial College and St. Mary's School of Medicine, London.
Throughout his career Dr. Peters shared his extensive experience in nearly 400 scientific papers and book chapters. His major books included Chemotherapy and drug resistance in malaria (2 editions), Atlas of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology (6 editions between 1977 and 2007), and Four Passions: Conversations with Myself. Among his many awards are the King Faisal International Prize in Medicine, and the World Federation of Parasitology Distinguished Parasitologist Award. He has been recognized in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
