Over the course of her career, which began in 1957, she has worked in many roles, including head nurse for the VA Medical Center, operating room nurse and instructor for the Sisters of St. Joseph Medical Center, charge nurse for ambulatory care for the West LA Medical Center, staff nurse for West Park Hospital, and head nurse for Memorial Hospital in Culver City and UCLA Medical Center. Additionally, Ms. Cheney is regarded for her work as a clinical nurse specialist for medicine, surgery and ambulatory care at VA Medical Center. Driven by her desire to help others in need of medical help, she continues to support the well-being of others through her work with the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.
In recognition of professional excellence, as well as her outreach and civic work, Ms. Cheney was named Outstanding Public Speaker by the American Cancer Society. She also earned a Project Team Leadership Award from the American Cancer Society and was named Mission Delivery Person Volunteer of the Year by the American Cancer Society. Further, she won a Toastmaster Leadership Excellence Award and a Bronze Award from Toastmaster International. More recently, Ms. Cheney was honored with inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women. When queried about her professional achievements, Ms. Cheney credited the educational background from which her career has grown. She earned a diploma from the Sisters of St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1957 in Grand Forks, N.D. Later, she achieved a BSN from St. Louis University and an MSN from UCLA. As she looks ahead to the future, Ms. Cheney intends to continue in her work as a medical counselor and consultant to satisfy her passion for the prevention of disease. She keeps abreast of recent sciences studies and shares these concepts with friends, families and community members. She believes it is imperative that all hospitals and clinics get DNA stool kits as thousands of lives could be saved. She also wants to help to obtain funds from Congress to help patients with epilepsy to improve seizure control.
