As an educator, Mr. Britt has focused his career on helping to turn around the lives of those in prison and providing them with a brighter future. He has taught at prisons for two decades at a number of locations, including in the Walls Unit at Texas State Penitentiary, as well as the Ellis 1 and Ellis 2 Units, the Jim Ferguson Unit, and the Sugar Land Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Mr. Britt has been affiliated with Lee College in Baytown as a history professor since 1964. He also started the school's prison education program, which has since grown into one of the largest prison education programs in the United States. Furthermore, Mr. Britt was the honors program coordinator at Lee College from 1995 until his retirement in 2014. Although he is officially retired, he continues to teach at the school approximately once a week and still maintains an office there.
Mr. Britt's first involvement with Lee College was as a student in 1955. He graduated with an Associate of Arts in 1957 and went on to attend Sam Houston State University, from which he holds a Bachelor of Science in history and a Master of Arts in history. Mr. Britt has also completed additional graduate coursework in history and political science, Texas history, and science education. Prior to joining the faculty at Lee College, he taught history for four years at Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown.
In addition to his work in the classroom, Mr. Britt is noted for his long list of publications and historical anthologies as both a co-author and an editor. He has also remained active with several professional and civic organizations, including the Texas Community College Teachers Association, the East Texas Historical Association, and the Bay Area Heritage Society. Mr. Britt is a past member of the board of directors for the National Collegiate Honors Council and a current board member of the Friends of Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education Center. He is also past executive committee member of the Chambers County Historical Commission and past treasurer of the Monica Boyd Literacy Foundation.
Other activities that Mr. Britt has devoted himself to include serving as an educational adviser for a documentary on the 1917 Buffalo Soldiers mutiny in Houston, as well as a historical adviser to a documentary on Jean Lafitte. He and his wife, Donna, worked together to organize and conduct a seven-day Heritage Travel Program for the Texas State Historical Association during the summers of 2004, 2005 and 2006. They also collaborated to serve as evaluators for history workshops conducted by Humanities Texas for junior high school and high school teachers in the summers of 2010, 2011 and 2014.
Mr. Britt received numerous grants and formal awards over the course of his career in recognition of his efforts. Some of his most recent honors include the 2015 Betty Trap Chapman Award from the Houston History Alliance and the 2013 Exemplary Service Award from the Texas State Historical Association. In 2012, the Lee College Board of Regents voted to rename its social science building "John Britt Hall," and in 2011, he was elected as an honorary life member of the Great Plains Honors Council. These and Mr. Britt's previous formal honors and awards, as well as his many accomplishments, were featured in the 64th through 69th editions of Who's Who in America.
