LAKE ARIEL, PA, January 03, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Midori Yamanouchi has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Born in Osaka City, Japan, Dr. Yamanouchi is a retired social sciences educator with a great respect and love for the United States. After graduating from Tokyo Kasai University in 1948, she took an opportunity to study in the U.S., and studied at University of Tampa, Florida, in 1951.
Returning to Tokyo, she worked as a chief research associate in the International Division of Sophia University in Tokyo, assisting an American scholar with his research on post-war Japanese student movement, 1952-56. She received an American accredited B.A. degree there. Then, she was invited to do her graduate work at Michigan State University (MSU). She earned a M.A. in 1958.

While she was at MSU, the scholar she worked for at Sophia University joined MSU's faculty. He proposed to her, but she declined because she had no intention of breaking a promise she made to the U.S. Government not to change her student VISA status. When he went to the immigration office in Detroit seeking help, the officers liked her response very much and wished for her to stay in America, so they offered to give her a Green Card in 10 days time if she would accept his proposal. She was so impressed with the officers' warmth that she decided to marry him and become an American. She was naturalized and became a citizen in 1962, after being a permanent resident since 1957.

Dr. Yamanouchi worked as a librarian and bibliographer at MSU immediately after earning her M.A. in Library Science from the University of Michigan in 1959. She took a brief break from the position in 1963 to serve as director of research and development at Sperry & Hutchinson Company in New York for a year to help the company's president with a plan to do business in Japan. In 1967 she accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Social Science at Marshall University in West Virginia. Her second marriage took her to Fisk University in Tennessee and Livingston College in North Carolina. She took a visiting professorship at Frostburg State College before joining the faculty at the University of Scranton where she retired as full professor in 2006, after 31 years. She then served as the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Lackawanna College for two years.

Since 2008, Dr. Yamanouchi has continued to stay active with a number of professional and civic organizations. Currently, she is a board member of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic and the Everhart Museum, as well as a member of the Salem Township Library Board. Her past positions include president of the Pennsylvania Sociological Society, executive board member of the International Society for Comparative Study of Civilizations, and executive board member of the Association for General and Liberal Studies. She was recently noted for the Dr. Midori Yamanouchi Lecture Series, which was established at Misericordia University in 2012 to 2015. Furthermore, she has served as a translator and editor for a number of books and professional publications. She also served as the editor of the above organizations, i.e., Sociological Viewpoint, Comparative Civilizations Review, etc. In 2000, the Polish government honored her for her contributions to assisting a Polish-based international linguistic organization and her goodwill liaison services "with UNO (DPI, NGO), IOUTN and World Forum for Rapprochement of Nations, Races and Religions," with the presentation of a miniature peace ball.

Dr. Yamanouchi's endeavors and accomplishments have been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including being named Woman of the Year by the International Biographic Center in 2014 and being named an honorary professor of Karaganda Economic University in Kazakhstan in 2009. Other honors include, but are not limited to, a David Gray Award from Keystone College in 2014, a Presidential Medallion from Keystone College in 2009, a UN Day Rinaldi Memorial Award in 2007, an Educational Service Award from the Wilkes Barre Board of Education in 2002, and a Seeley Service Medal from Lackawanna College in 2001.
