Dr. Greenough first began working in Bangladesh in 1962 as a staff associate at the National Heart Institute's Cholera Research Laboratory in Dhaka. During this time, he served as senior surgeon for the U.S. Public Health Service. After three years, he returned to the United States to become chief of the Infectious Diseases Division of Johns Hopkins University's School of Medicine. He directed the school's Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program from 1974 to 1977.
In addition to these professional roles, Dr. Greenough has established his reputation as a trusted consultant and sought-after speaker in the field. He has held leadership and advisory positions with numerous organizations, including the National Institutes of Health's Bacteriology and Mycology Study Section, the Bangladesh Information Center and the Bangladesh Foundation, and the International Child Health Foundation. Dr. Greenough has also served as an editor for medical publications, and contributed articles to professional journals and chapters to books. He holds a number of patents in the field as well.
Dr. Greenough is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, which honored him with the Mary Betty Stevens Award for Excellence in in Clinical Investigation prize in 2012. His further professional affiliations include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Bangladesh Medical Society, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Society for Clinical Investigation, among others. He is also a member of the American Geriatric Society, from which he received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award from Humanism in Medicine in 2014.
Dr. Greenough's efforts have resulted in several other awards and honors over the course of his career as well, such as an Outstanding Service Award from the Bangladeshi-American Foundation and an International Prize in Medicine from the King Faisal Foundation.
