Dr. Dugan prepared for his professional endeavors by earning a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, and an MD from Louisiana State University in 1966 and 1968, respectively. He also obtained a diploma in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease from the American Board of Internal Medicine and became board certified in interventional cardiology. Further, Dr. Dugan completed training as a medical intern at the Louisiana State University division of Charity Hospital from 1968 to 1969, a resident in medicine at the same location from 1969 to 1971, and a fellow in cardiology at Duke University Medical Center from 1973 to 1975. From 1971 to 1973, he served as a major in the U.S. Army.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Dugan earned a Decorated Army Commendation Medal, the BEL Award in 1968, and the Keith Collins Memorial Award just this year. He was also named Top Cardiologist by New Orleans Magazine in 1993, 1994, 1998, and from 2001 to 2014, and was listed among the Best Doctors in America from 1996 to 2016.
