Ralph Mabey has been a shareholder of the firm Kirton McConkie in Salt Lake City, Utah since 2014. His primary practice areas include litigation, commercial bankruptcy and creditors' rights, and alternative dispute resolution. In addition to his work as an attorney, Mr. Mabey is often called upon to serve as a court-appointed examiner, expert witness, arbitrator and mediator.
Mr. Mabey pursued a career in law after graduating cum laude from the University of Utah in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts. He started working as a law clerk in 1970 at the Office of the Attorney General in Salt Lake City. In 1972, Mr. Mabey obtained a JD from Columbia Law School, where he served on the Columbia Law Review, and was admitted to practice in the state of Utah, as well as before the United States District Court for the District of Utah, where he clerked for The Honorable Aldon J. Anderson, 1972-73.
He has since become admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, and the 3rd, 4th and 10th circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals. In 1985, he was admitted to practice in the State of New York.
Prior to joining Kirton-McConkie, Mr. Mabey was senior of counsel for the California firm Stutman, Treister & Glatt for eight years. He served as partner of Irvine, Smith and Mabey from 1973 to 1979, LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae LLP from 1983 to 2005, and Mabey & Murray LC from 2005 to 2006. Mr. Mabey also accrued four years of experience as a U.S. bankruptcy judge for the District of Utah. From 1983 to 2005, he was a senior lecturer at Brigham Young University's J. Reuben Clark Law School. He is currently professor of law at the University of Utah's S.J. Quinney College of Law.
Aside from his work in the courtroom and the classroom, Mr. Mabey has been an active member of the legal community throughout his career. He is a past president and chair of the American College of Bankruptcy, a past director of the International Insolvency Institute, and a business bankruptcy committee member of the American Bar Association. His further affiliations include the National Bankruptcy Conference, American Law Institute and the American Bankruptcy Institute. Mr. Mabey has also utilized his writing skills as a contributing author for Collier on Bankruptcy. He spent two years as managing editor of the Norton Bankruptcy Law Adviser.
Mr. Mabey is a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and a father to five daughters. He and his wife, Sylvia, have been married since 1968. When Mr. Mabey isn't working, he enjoys running and fly fishing. His many accomplishments have been featured in the 48th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America and the 28th through 43rd editions of Who's Who in the West.
