With an astounding seven decades of practiced industry experience, Dr. Probstein is uniquely qualified for his position with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has served as a Ford professor of engineering emeritus since 1996. He started his career at New York University as a research assistant in physics in 1946 and as an instructor of engineering mechanics in 1947, and the following year, he earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from his employer. Upon graduating, he became a research assistant in the department of aeronautical engineering at Princeton University, where he stayed until 1952. During this time, Dr. Probstein returned to school, obtaining a Master of Science in engineering, a Master of Arts, and a Ph.D., all from Princeton. From 1952 until 1954, he served as a research associate and assistant professor at Princeton University, and subsequently moved to Brown University, where he took on the roles of assistant professor of the division of engineering and applied mathematics, associate professor, and professor. At that point, he joined MIT as a professor of mechanical engineering - a role he maintained until 1989. Dr. Probstein then became the institute's Ford professor of engineering and professor of mechanical engineering. In addition to his plethora of roles in academia, he has also worked as senior partner for Water Purification Associates, chairman of the board for Water General Corp, and senior corporate technical advisor for Foster-Miller, Inc.
In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Probstein affiliates himself with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, all of which he is a fellow. Throughout his notable and long-standing career, he has contributed his knowledge to creative works such as, "Hypersonic Flow Theory," which was published in 1959, "Water in Synthetic Fuel Production," which was published in 1978, and "Physicochemical Hydrodynamics," which was released in 1989 and again in 2003. He has been honored many times for his work in the field with election to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engfineering, the American Academy of Arts and Science and through features in Who's Who in Finance and Business, where he was listed four times, Who's Who in American Education, where he was listed twice, and Who's Who in the World, where he has been listed nearly 15 times. He also earned an honorary Doctor of Science from Brown University in 1997. Looking ahead, Dr. Probstein intends to experience growth and success.
