Widely regarded for his skill as an industrial products manufacturing company executive, Mr. Sklenar lends more than 50 years of professional experience as the chairman emeritus of the board of directors with Vulcan Materials Company. Based in Birmingham, AL, the company is recognized as the nation's largest producer of construction aggregates. In addition to producing crushed stone, sand and gravel, Vulcan Materials Company is also a major producer of aggregates-based construction materials, including asphalt and ready-mix concrete. Mr. Sklenar initially joined the company in 1972 as the vice president of finance. During the next three decades, he enjoyed various leadership roles within the company before accepting a position as chairman of the board in 1997. Since the turn of the century, Mr. Sklenar has continued to assist Vulcan Materials Company as a chairman emeritus.
Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Sklenar has been continually recognized for his contributions to the manufacturing industry. He has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. In addition, he was selected for inclusion in the 1st edition of Who's Who in America: Student Version, which was published in 1991. Most recently, Mr. Sklenar was named to the Birmingham Business Hall of Fame in 2013. A Certified Public Accountant, he received a Certificate of Merit from the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and an Elijah Watts Sells Award from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Mr. Sklenar was awarded a Doctor of Laws from Birmingham-Southern College in 1996.
Prior to entering a career in manufacturing, Mr. Sklenar attended the University of Omaha, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1952. He went on to complete an MBA at Harvard University in 1954. Recognized as leading voice in his field of expertise, Mr. Sklenar co-authored "The Automatic Factory: A Critical Examination," which was published in 1955. His early leadership roles include positions with the Boise-Cascade Corporation and Cudahy Corporation.
