Upon graduating, he began as a staff physician with Rogaland Hospital, where he stayed for a year before becoming a general practitioner in Sokndal in Rogaland County. Two years after entering the medical field, he became a research fellow in the department of biochemistry at his alma mater.
For nearly four decades after completing his fellowship, Dr. Haarr served in the roles of assistant professor, associate professor, associate professor of virology in the department of microbiology and immunology, and professor with the University of Bergen. During this long stretch of time at the school, he obtained a Ph.D. there to further his professional growth. In addition, he has held the roles of professor with and director of the National Center for Research in Virology, consultant in virology at Haukeland Hospital, and visiting professor at UCLA and Northwestern University Medical School.
A stunning example of excellence in his field, Dr. Haarr affiliates himself with the American Society of Microbiology, the Society of General Microbiology, Norwegian Medical Association, Norwegian Society of Virology, and the Norwegian Biochemistry Society in order to keep abreast of changes in the field.
