Mary Kathleen Nordgren, better known as Kathy, is a Family and Consumer Science educator who has been retired since 2011. She prepared for her career in academia at the University of Minnesota, from which she earned a Bachelor of Science in home economics in 1973. Though she initially had no plans to become a teacher, she decided to become an educator during her sophomore year in college, following in the footsteps of her mother and sister. She later went on to earn a Master of Education, also from the University of Minnesota.
Ms. Nordgren began her teaching career as a Home Economics educator for Lake Superior School District in Silver Bay, Minnesota. She remained with the district until 1982, when she decided to change gears for 10 years as a banker for Union State Bank in Hazen, N.D. Ms. Norgren returned to the academic field in 1992 as a Family and Consumer Science educator at Golden Valley High School until 2006. She spent the remainder of her career as a Family and Consumer Science educator at Hebron High School.
Since her retirement in 2011, Ms. Nordgren has been enjoying her free time and doing a lot of traveling. She maintains memberships with Delta Kappa Gamma, the North Dakota Retired Teachers Association, and the Missouri River Basin Retired Teachers Association, and Hazen Lions Club. Ms. Nordgren has also served as a board member, secretary and charter president of the Hazen Lioness Club, as well as a member of the board of directors, treasurer, financial secretary and Sunday school teacher at her local English Lutheran Church. In the past, Ms. Nordgren served as a delegate leader for People to People Student Ambassadors in 2001 and a master adviser to Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) in 2010.
Ms. Nordgren is also a past recipient of the Mental Health Association's Prevention through Education Award. Her many achievements were taken into consideration when she was chosen to be featured in the 6th edition of Who's Who in American Education and multiple editions of Who's Who of American Women.
