"For me, a life in the law has always meant a life of service," says Mr. Bishop, who has dedicated the last 24 years to the faith-based mission of Catholic Charities Legal Network of the Archdiocese of Washington ("Legal Network"). Serving as practicing attorney and director of the Legal Network, Mr. Bishop coordinates the activities of a staff of attorneys and over 500 pro bono attorneys to deliver free legal services to poor and vulnerable populations in the District of Columbia, and surrounding Maryland counties of Prince George's, Montgomery, Calvert, and Saint Mary's. Annually, over 5,000 low-income individuals and families have accessed the Legal Network's offering of vital legal services. Driven by the desire to help those who cannot help themselves, Mr. Bishop has aided parents in matters relating to child custody and guardianships, end-of-life planning, complex consumer bankruptcy, and landlord-tenant cases.
Mr. Bishop's dedication and commitment to serving others has gained him recognition from numerous professional organizations and the Archdiocese of Washington. The District of Columbia Bar Foundation bestowed upon him the Jerrold Scoutt Prize, in 2014. From the Archdiocese of Washington, Mr. Bishop was awarded the 75th Anniversary Cardinal's Award, a Benemerenti Medal, a James Cardinal Hickey 20th Anniversary Award, and the Order of Merit Award 2003. He was awarded the John Carroll Society Medal from the John Carroll Society. In addition, Mr. Bishop was selected for inclusion into Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in the World.
To prepare for his career, Mr. Bishop pursued and completed the necessary education to succeed in the field of law. He achieved a Juris Doctorate from Howard University School of Law in 1982 and a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Lincoln University, graduating magna cum laude in 1979. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar and District of Columbia Bar. As he progressed in his field, Mr. Bishop took on opportunities to establish his reputation of excellence, including work as the director of the Attorney/Client Arbitration Board of the District of Columbia. Today, he continues his impact as a mediator for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He is also a Civic Director of the Council for Court Excellence.
Mr. Bishop is a parishioner at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington, DC. Looking forward, he intends to continue his work with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, while taking on new faith-based projects and opportunities, as they arise.
