CHICAGO, IL, March 07, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Professor Dr. Jean Phifer Oden has been included in Marquis Who's Who. The title of Research Professor was awarded to Dr. Oden on October 21, 2015 by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
For nearly five decades, Dr. Oden has dedicated her time and energy to the field of education in a variety of ways. She came to prominence as a teacher in elementary schools throughout Chicago for both special needs and regular students. Later other noteworthy roles in Dr. Oden's career included positions as Learning Disability Teacher and Co-Chair at Philip and Englewood High Schools. Her professional innovations aided inner city students to graduate and enter society as workers or to continue education in college with special attention to their special needs. In recognition of her professional skills, she was awarded a grant and promoted to the position of special education facilitator and consultant by the Chicago Board of Education Superintendent. Selected as North Illinois Representative, Dr. Oden served on the Illinois Guidelines for Learning Disabilities Development Committee. This committee drafted certification procedures for students to become Learning Disability teachers or LD specialists. Dr. Oden, as a cultivator of home-school relations as a key factor in Black students' effective education, founded Black Parents United for Education and Related Services. Dr. Oden's understanding of the linkage of effective educational services to employment or social problems in Black communities led to her receipt of a U.S. grant to assist parents, community leaders, and others to understand the educational system and be more active in their schools, both elementary and high schools. Dr. Oden's activities led to awards and recognition by three Chicago mayors, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Chicago and National Urban League, and several community organizations. Dr. Oden's ideas on educational techniques produced an invitation to speak at the 19th Congress on Art and Communication at Cambridge University. Selected was her topic on Multicultural Education to aid social understanding among diverse societies and the enhancement of peace over the use of war.
Dr. Oden prepared for her career and involvements in areas of her interests by investing in her education. She earned a Bachelor of Education from the Teachers College in 1958, a Master of Education in Learning Disabilities from Chicago State University, a postgraduate certificate of advanced studies from the National College of Education, and a Doctor of Education from National Louis University. Dr. Oden has continued her educational and civic activities from the eighties and nineties to current time.

Educational memberships in the 80s/90s led to Dr. Oden's invitation to participate in U.S., educational research delegations to Vietnam, China and South Africa.
Professor Dr. Jean Phifer Oden, now eighty years old, continues her work today as a charter member of the National Eisenhower Foundation to renovate the Eisenhower Presidential Library to promote understanding and knowledge of World War II. In October 2015, Dr. Oden was certified as a Research Professor in Education/Social Policy for the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England. Dr. Oden also served as Charter Board Member in 2014 for the establishment of America's National Museum of African American History and Culture, which just opened in Washington, DC in October, 2016. Dr. Oden's current focus is on American history, museums, historic institutions, Native American Indians and institutions, veteran needs and contributions to our society, the importance of the preservation of public lands, animals, and quality and safety of our food sources. This is her contribution to future generations so they will know and appreciate those who came before them and understand the wonders of America and add their contributions.
