BOULDER, CO, March 07, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Deward E. Walker, Jr., is being included in Marquis Who's Who for his many noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, prominence in anthropology, and national and international recognition.
With more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. Walker continues to demonstrate professional excellence in the field of anthropology. He began in his field in 1961, when he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Oregon, where he later completed his Ph.D. After completing his postgraduate research, Dr. Walker assumed a position as Assistant Professor of Anthropology at George Washington University, where he stayed for a year before taking a position at Washington State University for an additional two years. In 1967 he was appointed Chairman of the University of Idaho department of sociology and anthropology and director of the anthropology research laboratory while a research collaborator at Washington State University. In 1969 Dr. Walker was invited to assume a position in the population research program in the Institute of Behavioral Sciences at the University of Colorado, Boulder, because of his extensive research on tribal populations. That same year, 1969, he accepted a position as professor in the department of anthropology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and remains in those departments as emeritus professor. He has also served in various other roles at the University of Colorado, Boulder, including becoming a professor and Associate Chair of the department of ethnic studies and Associate Dean of the graduate school.
Dr. Walker has also served as a member of the American Anthropological Association, honorary lifetime member of the Society for Applied Anthropology, member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and member of the High Plains Society for Applied Anthropology. Dr. Walker has documented his extensive research experience and knowledge in more than 250 publications and 50+ years of teaching and guiding student tribal research. His research has concerned many tribes, including the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians (ATNI); Assiniboine-Sioux, Ft. Peck; Bitterroot Salish; Blackfeet, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe; Cheyenne-Arapaho; Coeur d'Alene; Confederated Colville Tribes; Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes; Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation; Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon; Great Lakes Tribes; Hopi; Kalispel/Pend d'Oreille; Klamath; NATHPO (National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers); Navajo; Nez Perce; Northern Paiute-Burns; Paiute-Shoshone, Fallon; Pine Ridge Sioux; Rosebud Sioux Tribe; Shoshone and Arapaho, Wind River; Shoshone-Bannock, Ft. Dr. Walker also finds it of the utmost importance to give back to the communities he studies through organizations and major research projects such as the Basalt Waste Isolation Project, the Native American Rights Fund (NARF), the Gateway West project, and especially through his role as founder and chair of the Walker Research Group, Ltd. He has found his experience with many tribes to be of use in many projects such as the Hanford Environmental Dose Reconstruction project, various pipeline, powerline, and other energy studies, comprehensive impact and other studies of fish and their relationship with tribes, prison projects in defense of the religious freedom of Native Americans, and organizing and editorial responsibilities for the Handbook of North American Indians and journals such as Human Organization, American Anthropologist, the Journal of Northwest Anthropology (formerly NARN), and the High Plains Applied Anthropologist.
In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Walker has won a variety of awards, such as a fellowship through the National Science Foundation, and recognition from the Society for Applied Anthropology, the High Plains Society for Applied Anthropology, invited Harvard lectures on American Indian sacred geography, and inclusion in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
