A skilled musician and educator born in Germany, Neal Donner has taught violin in Los Angeles since 1981. He is also an active member of the Suzuki Music Association of California, serving as president of the organization's Los Angeles branch from 1988 to 1990 and from 2003 to 2005. In addition to being a successful independent music professional, Mr. Donner is noted for his work in politics. He was the Libertarian candidate for the California State Assembly in Santa Monica in 1984 and 1986, for the State Senate in 1994, and for the U.S. Congress in 1996. Mr. Donner served as vice chair of the Libertarian Party of California in 1989.
Mr. Donner moved to the United States in 1946 and graduated from Oberlin College in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology. He taught for the Peace Corps in Ethiopia for two years, and then relocated back to the United States to earn a Master of Arts from the University of Michigan in 1968. Later in his career, Mr. Donner obtained a Ph.D. in Chinese Buddhism from the University of British Columbia in 1976. After serving as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Virginia for two years, he was a scholar-in-residence at the Cimarron Zen Center in Los Angeles from 1978 to 1979.
Aside from his work in music and education, Mr. Donner has utilized his skills to translate a number of publications. These include "Entrepreneur and Gentleman," published in 1976, and "History of Hindu-Buddhist Thought," published in 1977, both from Japanese, "The Great Calming and Contemplation of Chih-i," published in 1993, from Chinese, and "The Legacy of Pythagoras," published in 1995, from German. His hobbies include languages, poetry and running.
Mr. Donner's achievements were taken into consideration when he was chosen to be featured in the 63rd through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 4th and 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, the 23rd and 24th editions of Who's Who in the West, and the 26th through 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World.
