Recognized for remarkable decades of invaluable contributions to his field, Dr. Dulany parlays his knowledge into his current role as professor emeritus for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, his position since 1998. Prior to entering the field, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tennessee. After graduating, he became a teaching fellow in psychology, then a Rockefeller research fellow in philosophy, followed by two years as instructor in psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. In January 1955, the University of Michigan formally awarded his PhD in psychology for work completed before he entered the army in Summer 1954. Stationed in Puerto Rico, he became a lecturer in psychology at for FSU Extension for Overseas Military Personnel. In 1956, he became an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Illinois for three years, also serving one term in 1958 as visiting faculty at Harvard University. In 1959 he became a tenured associate professor, and in 1964 a full professor.
A fellow of the American Psychological Association, Association of Psychological Science, and the Psychonomic Society, Dr. Dulany has parlayed his extensive knowledge into numerous creative works: "A Method for Teaching English to Spanish Speaking Military Personnel," which he co-authored in 1956, and "Contribution to Modern Psychology," which he co-edited in 1963. This has been followed by articles, chapters, invited colloquia, and professional meeting presentations reporting experimental and theoretical analyses of the role of consciousness in metal activity. More recently, for example, in 2010 he presented the keynote address for the International Science of Mind, Brain and Consciousness at Joshi Bedekar College, Mumbai, then in 2011 a theory of implicit and explicit scientific thinking at a Purdue University conference. In 2012 his recent articles were discussed on an online Nature forum, and in 2013 he presented a methodology of phenomenal reports at ASSC in San Diego. In 2014, he presented his mentalistic metheory at a symposium on philosophical and psychological views of consciousness at APA in Washington. Then in 2015 he reported theory and experiments at Psychonomics in Chicago, and in 2016 at Science of Consciousness in Tucson. In addition, he was Editor of American Journal of Psychology from 1988 to 2008. Throughout his career, he has won a variety of awards, including research grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Mental Health, and Graduate College, as well as departmental and college teaching awards, especially for his graduate course satisfying the departmental conceptual foundation requirement. Additionally, he has had the honor of being named to Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World.
