Mrs. Latta's passion for gracious living, coupled with an eye for design, and a tasteful selection and arrangement of furnishings in her own home are what prompted the local design firm that she had been working with to offer her the opportunity to join their organization as a professional. That invitation became the catalyst that jump-started her lengthy career. Now retired, she concluded her career as the senior staff-designer for CHANCELOR's INC. in Bellingham, WA. Prior to that association she held responsible positions as a designer's assistant for FRANK J. LINCOLN INTERIORS, where local, national, and international design projects for high-end clientele were carried out. She also served as design and administrative assistant to the president of DESIGNSTUDIO ARCHITECTURAL and INTERIOR DESIGN CONCEPTS, as assistant to the chief designer for RABLEN-WEST INTERIORS, and director of the Vero Beach, FL Design Studio of WELLINGTON HALL, LTD. Additionally, for four years she was the owner and designer of her own business in Vero Beach called THE DESIGNERY.
Throughout her design career, Mrs. Latta was involved with highly diversified commissions; one of which was assisting with the design and fabrication of a new marketing concept for the footwear industry which was implemented in two mall stores in New Jersey. The concept ultimately received a U.S. Patent. In recognition of her professional excellence, she was selected for inclusion into Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
Building upon a strong emphasis on community service instilled in Mrs. Latta not only by the example set by her parents, but also the influence of her schooling at The Bishop's School, La Jolla, CA, and her lifetime membership in Kappa Kappa Gamma, which began at the University of Washington, Seattle, she was actively involved in community projects wherever she lived. The Indian River Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary, The Malt Shoppe After School Program, the Snohomish Federated Health and Safety Network, and the Vero Beach Theatre Guild are only some of the organizations that received her support. Most notably, however, Mrs. Latta worked tirelessly to preserve an eighteen-acre remnant portion of the McKee Jungle Gardens, Florida's third oldest major tourist attraction of which her late husband (grandson of the Garden's co-founder), was co-owner and director until the attraction closed and the property was sold for development in 1979. She was instrumental in bringing the work of the Garden's Preservation Society to the attention of the Trust for Public Land, which enabled the Society to enlarge its vision and become the Indian River Land Trust. Guided by the expertise of the Trust for Public Land, not only was the garden saved, but concurrently the Indian River Land Trust was successful in promoting local support for a 26 million-dollar Bond Referendum for the purpose of purchasing endangered land throughout Indian River County to benefit its citizens. The effort to save the Garden was recognized and endorsed by The Garden Conservancy as a "preservation project of national significance." In 1998 the saved remnant of McKee Jungle Gardens also received approval for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, is considered a "Florida Landmark," and more recently was named by NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC as "one of 22 of the most soothing places of surprise and sanctuary in North America."
Looking to the future, Ms. Latta will continue to fulfill her responsibilities as she has since 1999, serving as an officer and director of JADSL CORPORATION, a family-held business headquartered in Anacortes, WA. She will further enjoy her retirement by connecting with family and friends in addition to pursuing a dedication to physical fitness and a delight in ballroom dancing, while also directing her energies to her vital interest in the on-going success of the McKee Botanical Garden, where her daughter, Marion McKee Latta de Vogel, now serves as a Board member.
