For nearly two years, Emil Ardelean has been the chief engineer and co-owner of Acme Solutions, LLC. Dr. Ardelean is known as an expert in structural dynamics, mechanics of materials, mechanical design, manufacturing, control, static and dynamic testing, and acoustics and aerolasticity. The ultimate goal of Acme Solutions, LLC is to develop alternative, cleaner, more cost-efficient and better technologies.
In addition, he is credited with the development of the V-stack piezoelectric actuator and application for active flutter control. Dr. Ardelean also researches lightweight, low frequency acoustic barriers. Since May 2016, Dr. Ardelean has been a research professor in the electrical and computer engineering department at the University of New Mexico.
Dr. Ardelean is noted for holding several patents. Patent No: US 8,286,498 B1 is a method and apparatus for tensile testing of electrical cable bundles. Patent No: US 8,544,340 B1 is for a device for testing thin specimens in pure bending. Dr. Ardelean's Patent No: US 9,387,739 pertains to an adjustable device for supporting hitch mounted accessories. Additionally, there is a patent pending for a compliance hinge for membrane-like deployable structures.
Prior to co-founding Acme Solutions, Dr. Ardelean worked as a research scientist and engineer for Schafer Corporation where he investigated the structural dynamic effects of electrical cables on structures, characterized thin composites subjected to large strains and large deployable structures.
Dr. Ardelean attended Universitatea Tehnica din Cluj-Napoca to earn a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and mechanical technology, and a Master of Science. Afterwards, he continued his education at Duke University to earn a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering.
Dr. Ardelean started his career in Romania, where he worked as a design engineer for a few companies. He started working for IBM in North Carolina in the mid-1990s. After working as a graduate assistant while earning a doctorate at Duke University, he moved to New Mexico.
Displaying his dedication to the field of engineering, Dr. Ardelean maintains affiliation with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Romanian Engineering Society. He maintains affiliation with the SPIE Industrial & Commercial Applications of Smart Structures Technologies as a technical committee member, and is a senior member of the AIAA, a member of ASME and a member of the AGIR. Dr. Ardelean is credited with more than 30 publications in peer-reviewed journals or professional conferences.
