In a career that began in 1973, Dr. Watson has excelled in the field of cardiothoracic surgery by utilizing his extensive skillset and by always putting his patients first. Now retired, he spent much of his tenure serving the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, where he held various roles over the course of 17 years. He concluded his career as the university hospital's associate chief medical officer, a position that he attained after succeeding as a chairman of cardiothoracic surgery, professor of pediatrics, and professor of surgery. Early on in his career, Dr. Watson came to prominence at George Washington University's department for child health and development, where he was the attending cardiovascular surgeon, assistant professor and associate cardiovascular surgeon. In addition, he held noteworthy roles including acting senior surgeon with the National Heart and Lung Institute, and chief resident in cardiovascular and general surgery at Stanford University Medical Center. In recognition of his professional excellence, Dr. Watson was awarded as a Smith Kline & French fellow at Lehigh University, a National Science Foundation fellow and a university interdepartmental scholar at Lehigh University. He was also honorably featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
To prepare for a career in the medical field, Dr. Watson pursued and completed his education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in applied science and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in 1968, a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from Stanford University in 1969, and an MD from Duke University in 1972. Thereafter, he completed an internship at the Stanford University Medical Center and two residencies in cardiovascular surgery and general surgery, also at the Stanford University Medical Center. A certified diplomat accredited by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Watson returned to his studies years later to continually develop his knowledge and education. In 1992, he earned an MBA from Vanderbilt University. Considered an expert in his field, Dr. Watson has remained at the top of his field through his memberships with the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the National Institutes of Health Alumni Association, the Stanford University Medical Alumni Association, and the Lehigh University Alumni Association. As he looks to the future, Dr. Watson intends to enjoy his retirement while possibly taking on consulting opportunities as they arise.
