In a career that has spanned more than 35 years, Dr. Kirby has established his reputation of excellence as an epidemiologist, geographer and researcher. With proven expertise in many facets of health care, much of his work centers on the idea that epidemiology is the cornerstone of public health. "By identifying risk factors for disease, we are able to shape policy decisions and evidence-based practice," he says. Over the course of his career, Dr. Kirby has served as a research analyst for the Wisconsin Center for Health Statistics, a senior research analyst for maternal and child health at the Arkansas Center for Health Statistics and distinguished university professor and Marrell endowed chair in the Department of Community and Family Health, College of Public Health, University of South Florida. Dr. Kirby holds joint appointments in three departments in the USF Morsani College of Medicine, as well as in the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Child and Family Studies, at USF. Dr. Kirby is also regarded for his work in education. He has been an assistant professor and instructor in the Department of Pediatrics of the University of Arkansas Medical Center, associate professor for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Milwaukee Clinical Campus at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, professor and vice chair of the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama, lecturer at the University of Wisconsin, adjunct professor at the College of Business and Management at Cardinal Stritch University and visiting assistant professor at Beloit College.
In recognition of professional excellence in his career, Dr. Kirby was the recipient of the Callon-Leonard Award from the Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care, the Byron L. Hawks Award from the Arkansas Perinatal Association, Fraternalist of the Year Award from the Court Razorback Indiana Order of Foresters, and a President's Award from the National Birth Defects Prevention Network. Additionally, he was named Outstanding Advocate for Maternal and Child Health by the Wisconsin Maternal and Child Health Coalition, and received the National Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Award for Excellence in Teaching. Most recently, Dr. Kirby was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Dr. Kirby began his academic career with training in human geography, and has found interesting ways to incorporate the spatial perspective into his work in public health. To prepare for his career, he attended the University of Wisconsin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1974, a Master of Science in 1977, a Ph.D. in geography in 1981, and a second master's degree in preventive medicine-epidemiology in 1991. To remain at the top of his field, he is involved in his professional community. He is a fellow and member of the board of directors of the American College of Epidemiology, a member of the American Public Health Association, a life member of the Association of American Geographers, and a life member of the Agricultural History Society. Formerly, he was president of the Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care, the Arkansas Perinatal Association, the National Birth Defects Prevention Network, the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Research, and the Association of Teachers of Maternal and Child Health. Dr. Kirby was chair of the program committee for the 4th Congress of Epidemiology in the Americas in 2016, and serves on the board of the Perinatal Foundation (Madison, Wisconsin. As he looks ahead to the future, Dr. Kirby intends to continue conducting epidemiologic research in perinatal health, focusing on birth defects and developmental disabilities surveillance, epidemiology, and prevention.
