WINSTON-SALEM, NC, March 27, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- T. Gordon Scott has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Retired since 2009, Dr. Scott dedicated more than 45 years to the field of education. He has now been named a Lifetime Achievement Inductee. With a focus on the field of science, he concluded his career as an associate professor of chemistry at Winston-Salem State University (NC), a role that he held for five years. Previously, he excelled as an adjunct instructor of pharmacology at National College, adjunct professor of natural sciences for Danville Community College (VA), associate professor of chemistry at Jarvis Christian College (TX), associate professor of chemistry at Union College (KY), associate professor of chemistry at Knoxville College (TN), associate professor at Bryan College (TN), assistant professor of chemistry at Alderson Broaddus University (WV), and lecturer of biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also served as visiting professor at Louisiana College and (interim) assistant professor at Oberlin College (OH). In addition, Dr. Scott served in roles at the secondary level as an instructor of mathematics at Winona Independent School District in Texas, and supervisor of secondary studies at Westminster Academy (PA).
In recognition of his academic and leadership excellence, Dr. Scott was selected as a Thouron Awardee, which funds graduate study at any university in the U.K. With the Award he matriculated in Gonville & Caius College at Cambridge University. Subsequently, in post-baccalaureate research he received various grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Army Research Organization, and the Welch Foundation, which recognizes the leading academic chemist(s) in the state of Texas. Additionally, Dr. Scott has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
Along with his work inside the classroom, Dr. Scott is known for two prominent contributions to chemistry, both with international effect. In applied science, (R&D) with Dupont he developed an efficient process for production of a resin that would successfully bind glistening acrylic pigments for use as automotive finishes. The first application world-wide of this formulation was on 1964 model Cadillacs and Buicks. In pure science with a co-investigator (Richard D. Spencer) at the University of Illinois, he determined the lifetime of the fluorescent excited state of coenzyme NADH, under half-a-billionth of a second. It is now an internationally-accepted constant in biochemistry. Using this constant, the time needed to conduct a rate experiment involving NADH in living systems was reduced from two or more weeks to two to four hours, a significant saving in research time and materials. As a direct consequence of using the constant within a decade of publication six hereditary metabolic diseases were either controlled or cured through research at established research stations in the United States and Europe. Dr. Scott, along with other professional experts in his field, authored "Synthetic Procedures in Nucleic Acid Chemistry," and "Spectroscopic Model Studies of NAD(H)," Nicotinamide-Adenine Dinucleotide (Reduced). Today, he continues to study the created order and consults periodically with active professionals.
To prepare for a career in chemistry, Dr. Scott earned a Bachelor of Arts (Chemistry) from the University of Pennsylvania in 1963, a second Bachelor of Arts (Natural Science) from Cambridge University in 1965, a Master of Arts from Cambridge University in 1970, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He has remained at the top of his field through his professional memberships with the American Chemical Society, the Cambridge University Chemical Society, and the American Scientific Affiliation. As he looks to the future, Dr. Scott intends to continue enjoying his retirement while taking on select opportunities in the years to come.
