Dr. Assy Nimer is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Head of Department of Internal Medicine at Galilee Medical Center, Bar Ilan University, Israel. He obtained his MD in 1987 at Louvain (UCL), Belgium and acquired post-graduate training in Internal Medicine in 1990-94 from Rambam Hospital, Haifa. From 1994-96 he was a Clinical Fellow in the Liver Unit at the University of Manitoba and at the University of Western Ontario, Canada; where he served under the supervision of Prof GY. Minuk and P Adams, and Ghent CN. From 1996-1999 he was the hepatology consultant at Rambam Hospital, Haifa, Technion, Israel. In 1999 he moved to Safed and developed the liver disease unit in Ziv Medical Center and he was the Head of Liver Unit from 2006-2014. In 2007 he was an Assistant Professor in the division of medicine at Technion Institute. In 2012 he received the nomination of associate professor at the faculty of medicine, Bar Ilan, University. Dr. Assy is active in both laboratory and clinical based research. In the laboratory his work has focused on the expression of cytokines in fatty liver diseases. His work in this area has lead to important discoveries regarding the association between hepatic fatty liver disease, soft drinks and coronary artery disease. He has also studied the effects of vitamin D supplementation to patients with chronic hepatitis C viral and showed an increase in SVR (87%). Funding for his research has been provided Technion Institute, Israeli Ministry of Health, and Ziv Medical Center Research Foundation. Dr. Assy's clinical research activities have largely been in the area of viral hepatitis (B, C) where he has studied the epidemiology, natural history and socioeconomic impact of viral hepatitis in Israeli Arab populations. He also contributes mostly to the treatment of NAFLD and the contribution of liver fat accumulation to coronary artery diseases. Finally, he has served as the principle investigator on studies that involve the investigation and treatment of viral hepatitis B and C. In addition to having published in excess of 100 peer reviewed papers and book chapters relating to acute and chronic liver disease, Dr. Assy has served as active member (Treasurer) of the Israeli Association for the Study of Liver Disease (IASL) and recently organized the first international liver meeting in the Galilee, Tiberia, Israel. Actually he is the head of the department of internal medicine at Galilee Medical Center, Naharyia, Israel.
