NEW YORK, NY, April 06, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Jewel Thompson has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Thompson's musical prowess is, in part, the result of a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia State University and the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the Eastman School of Music. A Renaissance woman of keyboard and academic skills, she first exercised her talents and abilities as an educator in 1960 as an Assistant Professor at Virginia State University. Dr. Thompson took her talents to West Virginia State University from 1967 to 1968 and to West Virginia University Institute of Technology from 1968 to 1972. The Virginia native moved to New York City after her departure from WVU Tech and became an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Hunter College, from 1972 to 1985. She taught as an Assistant Professor from 1985 to 1990, and Associate Professor from 1990 to 1996, and continues to teach as full-time Professor since acquiring the title in 1997.
Dr. Thompson has remained active as a musician and member of her community outside of academics as well. She was the Minister of Music at The Abyssinian Baptist Church, serving as Organist from 1978 to 1983 and Choirmaster from 1983 to 2007. Further, Dr. Thompson has extended her established hand to the fledging musicians of tomorrow as a Music Director at area and national levels. She served as a member of the United Negro College Fund's Scholarship Selection Committee, a member of the American Music Center, Inc., was the Chair of the Arts Program of The Links Incorporated from 1989 to 1993, and was named a Delegate of the International Women's Leadership Association in 2015.
As a testament to her success, Dr. Thompson has been recognized for her knowledge and talent many times in her life, receiving a myriad of awards, including the Hattie M. Strong Foundation fellowship, the Ford Foundation fellowship, the title of Dame of Honour by the Knights of Malta, the Hunter College Presidential Award for excellence in service, the Music of the African Diaspora Award, the Outstanding Ministry Award by the Council of Churches of New York City, among others. She also has held membership with the American Society of New York State, and the International Women's Leadership Association Board. Additionally, Dr. Thompson has been included in Who's Who Among America's Teachers, and in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
