Dr. Sharp is uniquely qualified to serve as Chairman of Sharp Seminars in New York, which has been providing CFA exam preparation services since 1986. A native of Chester, Illinois, he earned a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering in 1959 from the University of Illinois and a Master of Science from Purdue University in 1961. In 1964 while working on a Ph.D. from Purdue, he relocated to New Jersey and served as an assistant professor of industrial engineering and economics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sharp completed his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1966. In 1967, he joined New York University's Graduate School of Business in New York City as an associate professor of quantitative methods and economics, a position he held until 1974. From 1974 to 1985, Mr. Sharp held various management positions, and provided internal consulting and financial planning services to AT&T. Additionally, he served as a professor of finance and assistant finance chairman for Pace University's Graduate School of Business in New York City from 1975-91.
Dr. Sharp is a Chartered Financial Analyst, Chartered Financial Manager, Certified Management Accountant, and Certified in Investment Performance Measurement. He is a member of the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute, North American Society for Corporate Planning (treasurer 1976-77, board of directors at large 1977-78), Institute of Management Sciences (chapter vice president academic 1972-74, chapter vice president program 1974-75, chapter vice president membership 1975-76, chapter president 1976-77), International Affiliation of Planning Societies (council 1978-84), New York Society of Security Analysts, Operations Research Society of America (president of corporate planning group 1976-82), American Association of University Professors (vice president of the Pace University chapter 1988-90), Theta Xi, and Mensa, Life Member.
Throughout his lengthy and notable career, Dr. Sharp has written 36 books involving statistics, economics, accounting, corporate finance, stock analysis, bond analysis, options and futures analysis, alternative investments, portfolio management, and ethics. He has also contributed articles to Sun Times News, Herald Tribune, County Journal, Sparta Journal, Management Science, Decision Sciences, Econometrica, Mathematical Programming, Naval Research Logistics Quarterly, AIIE Transactions, Industrial Engineering, Planning Review, Financial Executive, and American Statistical Association Proceedings. He has served as a speaker and moderator on the local and national level as well as at international meetings.
Dr. Sharp is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Illinois (2016) and the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Purdue University (2010). He has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Sharp has endowed annual teaching awards at Purdue University, University of Illinois, and Southern Illinois University. He has also endowed three annual scholarships at his home town high school in Chester, Illinois, in honor of his father, mother, and sister. Recognized with plaques on his named benches in Central Park and Carl Schurz Park, and in Chester Public Library and SIU Morris Library.
